Required talking points

  • Safety and Security of our students is UVM’s number one priority. Campus will be your home, it’s important to feel safe in your home!

  • Campus Safety has a mission of prevention & education

    • Students complete online modules before living on campus (Haven Training)

  • Blue Lights system & LiveSafe app

    • Blue Lights: There are over 100 blue lights on campus; a responding police officer will be alerted immediately

    • LiveSafe app:

      • The University of Vermont has implemented use of the LiveSafe app which "is a mobile two-way safety communications platform and risk mitigation tool

      • SafeWalk: Users can select a contact of their choice (who doesn’t need to have the app) to do a peer-to-peer virtual walk along. Parents may also appreciate this option and it can be used anywhere (not just at UVM). The contact selected with each virtual walk-along is 100% the students choice.

      • Ability to report anonymously via the app; send a message in the app versus needing to place a call; attach pictures/videos with a report

      • Provides access to critical safety and emergency resources in one location (Mental health, concerned about a student, bias/hate reporting, victim's advocate)

  • CatAlerts

    • CatAlert is UVM's rapid emergency notification system. CatAlerts help notify the campus community that a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees is occurring on the campus.

    • If you live off campus in Burlington, you should also sign up for BTV Community Alerts to receive emergency notifications from the City of Burlington.

  • UVM Campus Police

    • UVM Police is a true police force with state-wide authority

    • Bias training is conducted every year for the police, and de-escalation training is incorporated in multiple trainings throughout the year.

    • De-escalation training is a cornerstone to UVM Police decision-making.

    • UVM Chief of Police, Tim Bilodeau, has a customer service goal to maintain good relations with students and to problem-solve with them without the use of force in order to avoid conflict escalation. He will host an annual meeting with the community and students to receive feedback on how police interactions are working.

  • Crime statistics available on police services website (only say this if asked)
