Required talking points
-
One great aspect of UVM's size is that research opportunities are available to everyone - a small community within a larger research institution.
-
The FOUR Office (Fellowships, Opportunities, and Undergraduate Research) helps facilitate this process.
-
40% of UVM students have been involved in research.
-
Research opportunities are available across disciplines, and students can get involved as early as their first year!

I was able to get involved with research at the Medical School my second semester of my first year-- something that I never thought would be possible in such a large school. I have built a great relationship with my lab and will likely do my senior thesis with them. It also isn't bench lab science, but conversation science which I think is super unique and interesting. It really shows how anyone can get involved in research at UVM, cultivating it into an entire college career's work. -Ann Wong

My second semester of my first year I was in a psych class that required us to participate in a few different research studies. I signed up for one that was related to receiving snacks for answering questions. I went into the study, and was given a booklet of math questions, and the goal was to answer the questions on one page before the timer went off. If you were able to complete the questions you got a snack. After each page the time slowly went down. I personally am soooo bad at math. Like cannot even do my times tables. So for me I did not get even one snack, which was pretty embarrassing but the people conducting the study did not even make me feel bad at all. And although I will never participate in a math study again, I will definitely participate in a study because its a super cool way to be apart of something on campus. -Kat Edelmann

For my research class for History I researched UVM's founding and people that where more involved than Ira Allen, even though he gets the credit (basically because some rich person funded research into him and the chapel). It was so cool to use special collections to look at old documents from UVM's founding. Good example of research not just in hard sciences. -Owen Doherty
