AdvoCat Stories: New Student Orientation
-
I met my best friend at Orientation. She sat next to me at an info session for RSENR because she thought the person on the other side of her seemed cool. She ended up talking to me the whole time instead, though, and we spent a lot of Orientation together. At lunch one day, we were really excited about the Mac & cheese. We both wanted more and got up separately to get a second serving without telling the other. We both came back to the table with two servings to share, so we ended up eating a LOT of Mac & cheese that day. Before we left, she asked me if I would want to be roommates. I had a good feeling about it so I said yes. We have roomed together now for 3 years! -Tessa Schneider

I met one of my best friends at orientation and she decided to take a gap year but we stayed in touch my entire first year and when she came to UVM my second year we reconnected and became super close -Grace Budd

I was super nervous driving up to my first-year orientation, which happened to be right after my high school graduation and all-night party so I was running on almost empty. I was excited to meet people but cautious that I might never see the people that I meet again after the two days of orientation. Surprisingly, the friends I made at orientation were in my classes and I was able to keep in touch with them and grab meals with them. It was so, so helpful to have those familiar faces in my transition to college life. -Romaney Granizo-Mackenzie

AdvoCat Stories: Winter
-
last spring uvm had its first snow day in 17 years and my friends and I spent the day sledding with half of the uvm population and it was so crazy to see so many familiar faces in one space all hurling ourselves down a hill wearing plastic bags as sleds -Grace Budd

Whenever I'm asked about the weather in Vermont, I always tell the story of the massive snowstorm that we got in winter of 2020. As a native VTer, I don't get too excited about snow because it happens every year. However, when we got over a foot of snow, everyone else around me was super excited about it and we had a blast. We did all the things that I used to do as kids, sliding down the mountains of snow that were made by the snow plows and making sugar on snow. Overall it made me super excited to still be living in Vermont and was one of my favorite memories during my time at UVM. -Avi Bauer-

There was one night when it had just snowed a ton and my friends and I took sleds to the BCC with headlamps and sled for hours in the dark. We finished the night with hot coco. I think this really shows how 1) winters in Vermont can bring you some of your best memories and 2) you can always find adventurous people to do fun things with. -Ann Wong

My freshman year, there was a huge snow storm that left around 2 feet of snow on the ground. It was the end of November and my friends and I didn't really have anything to do. We dragged our skis and snowboards out onto the redstone green and literally played in the snow all night and it was so much fun. This is a common thing at redstone when the snow starts to fall many people grab their sleds. This story shows that everyone is still really social and gets outside when it gets cold. -Avery Alexy

On UVM's first snowday in forever everything was shutting down on campus because the storm had gotten so bad. But even then people were all outside and playing in the snow and I went over to a hill where people had built a ski jump and I went and did some jumps and had one of my most memorable days at UVM. It just showed me how even in the cold vermont winters people are still so active even on some of the coldest days. -Eva Philips
